Respite care

This page is about you, not the person you care for.

You've been doing this for months, maybe years. You are allowed to sleep, to go to your own doctor, to leave for a weekend. Respite care is how.

You are probably more tired than you've admitted

Family caregivers carry a load nobody measures. The guilt of resenting it is often heavier than the work itself — and asking for a break can feel like failing someone you love. It isn't. Burned-out caregivers are the most common reason people end up in nursing homes earlier than they needed to.

What respite can cover

From a few hours so you can breathe, to a full week so you can actually go somewhere.

  • An afternoon a week, reliably, so you can count on it
  • Your own medical appointments, finally kept
  • A weekend away without arranging six favours
  • A full week for a holiday, a wedding, a funeral
  • Overnight cover so you can sleep through
  • Emergency cover when you're the one who gets sick

How we take over without upsetting things

We learn the routine from you

The order things happen in, the mug they like, what makes a bad afternoon. You know it; we write it down.

The caregiver visits while you're still there

Before your first time away, they come once with you present. Nobody meets a stranger on the day you leave.

You go

Notes after every visit, and a phone call if anything changes. Otherwise, silence — which is the point.

What that works out to

  • One afternoon a week, 4 hours — about $710 a month
  • Two days a week, 8 hours each — about $2,840 a month
  • A full week away, daytime cover — about $2,870

If cost is the reason you haven't taken a break, call anyway. Even a few hours a month makes a difference, and we'll help you find a schedule that fits your budget.

Take the break

Start with one afternoon. Most families tell us afterwards they wish they'd called a year earlier.
